What is Coronary Artery Disease?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cardiovascular disease.\u00b9 CAD is caused by plaque buildup in the wall of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow over time. This process is called atherosclerosis, which can lead to a heart attack if left untreated.<\/p>

You may have no symptoms for many years, because plaque builds up slowly over time. Chest pain and shortness of breath are classic symptoms of CAD, but can also be related to muscle pain, stomach conditions or other issues.
